Text Box: The Executive Committee of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit
Education Association recognizes the talent, commitment, and
fortitude of our teaching staff on Tuesday, May 6, National Teacher
Day and of our school nurses on Wednesday, May 7, National School
Nurse Day. Keep up the good work!

IEP Grievance: Just prior to the scheduled arbitration date, the IEP Grievance, filed in 2005, was amicably settlement. All grievants will receive all monies for which they applied in the first year of the grievance. Even though this grievance was not arbitrated, it further validates the enforcement of the language in Section 64 – Individual Educational Programs.

Realignment: Our unit realignments were uneventful. We were pleased with the employment of the new language in Section 54 concerning a 50% change. Past President Wayne Proctor was the architect of the change and we recognize him for his leadership. It is hoped that the flow charts for Unit and Central Realignments will help to advise all of their realignment rights under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. For staff other than ESL, Central Realignment is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, at 5:00 PM.

Bridge: PDE has granted a one month extension to those individuals who are seeking a certification in a content area. The extension will allow educators to complete course work through July 2008, and apply that course work to fulfill the requirements to convert the Bridge certificate to an Instructional I certification. Deadline is July 31, 2008.

HOUSSE: Those individuals who are seeking certification via the HOUSSE must meet the December 31, 2008 deadline to qualify.

Alert: If you will be unable to complete your Bridge/HOUSSE within the specified timeframe, please contact me via the website email address immediately.

Philanthropic Activities: During December, the Association recognized each central office staff member and center staff member with whom the membership has contact by gifting a token of our appreciation of their service to our members. At the January board meeting in recognition of National School Board Members month, the Association awarded Dr. Donna Durno and each member of our school board with an engraved bookmark. In March, under the leadership of Craig Gunn, the Association made a contribution to the Stand for Children committee, funding Spring treat bags for children without homes.

New Teacher Dinner: During the creative talent and distinguished leadership of Melissa Kohl, our New Teacher Dinner was educational, enjoyable, and engaging. The informational binders created by Melissa and her committee will be entered into PSEA’s Internal Communications Competition!

HB 1841 = SB 1140: We await further action on the proposed legislation for statewide healthcare. At this point, the bill has been passed by the House Education Committee and moved to the House Appropriations Committee. However, no further action is scheduled. Secretary Darlene Lengel is our contact person on this pivotal legislation.

State Budget: The proposed state budget includes a 4.2% increase for education with line items of a 7% increase for Early Intervention, 6.6% increase for Special Education, and a 55% increase for Professional Development.

A Poignant Farewell: The Executive Committee and the Representative Council will bid a heart-ladened goodbye to our cherished treasurer, Marcia Wohlgemuth as she leaves her office in June of 2008. Marcia’s terms in office as both Membership Chair and Treasurer are characterized by her reliability, integrity, and joy of service. Marcia, you have touched each of us by your exemplary leadership and peaceful grace. You are our treasure!

Looking forward to visiting with everyone at Contract/Financial Nights in May!

We are specialists…..…………….……………………we stay with the child relentlessly.

Cordially,
VR Campbell
