Support PSEA-PACE

PSEA-PACE is a political action committee established by PSEA to support candidates in Pennsylvania elections.  PACE is a voluntary contribution you can make to state and local candidates who support issues related to public education.  You can also voluntarily contribute to the NEA-Fund.  The National Education Association Fund for Children and Public Education supports pro-public education candidates who are running for federal office.

If you are a new hire who would like to make a political action contribution for PSEA-PACE for local and state elections and/or the NEA-Fund for federal elections, complete the pledge section on the same enrollment used to join the AIUEA.  If you are an existing member who would like to contribute to PSEA-PACE and/or the NEA-Fund, contact Erin Lantz to have a contribution form sent to you.  You can make a one-time contribution or a continuous year-to year pledge.  Only 42 of our 400 members contribute on a regular basis to PACE.  We need your support!

Your Voice is Your Vote

On Tuesday, November 2, 2010, we will have the opportunity to elect the next governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Regardless of party affiliation, each member of this Association will be touched in some manner by the policies of the next governor of Pennsylvania.  Please recall that Act 48 – Professional Development was Governor Ridge’s educational initiative.

PSEA has developed a specific process which allows political candidates to seek the endorsement of the state organization.  The local Associations do not formally endorse candidates. After extensive interviewing, Dan Onorato, Allegheny County Executive, has earned PSEA‘s endorsement for the Governor of Pennsylvania.

Onorato, who addressed the Sunday evening meeting of the Gettysburg Summer Leadership Conference, stated he is committed to continuing funding formula based on the Legislature’s 2007 Costing Out Study.  He shared that he will prioritize funding for early childhood programs and will support PSEA’s 20/20 Vision for the Future - a first-of-its-kind comprehensive report which features public policy recommendations based on studies by educational experts and think tanks of varied ideologies.  Finally, he professed his support for teaching and learning conditions which make student achievement possible and for the retention of a quality workforce.

Keep the Promise………………………..

…………………..has become the battle cry for preservation of our current pension system.   In June, a bipartisan bill (HB 2497) overwhelming passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.  This bill provides a balanced approach to the pension funding crisis that threatens the security of the Pennsylvania School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS).  PSEA supports the bill because it preserves the defined benefit pension system for current and future school employees and also reduces costs to taxpayers in 2011 and beyond.   In the Fall of 2010, House Bill 2497 will likely be reviewed by the Senate.  Be prepared to contact your senator if her/his efforts negatively impact HB 2497 by reducing benefits for new hires and creating a two tier system.     Vice President Gunn has created a list serve to ensure that our membership is overtly informed on the pension concern.  If you have not received pension alert emails over the summer, please contact any officer and share your personal email so that you are included in the list serve.

Text Box: YOUR PENSION IS IN DANGER!!!!

The PA General Assembly soon may take up proposals that could make major changes to public employee pensions like PSERS and other systems. Due to a number of factors, primarily severe stock market losses associated with the economic downturn and the state and employers’ failure to adequately contribute to the fund, employers and the state will need to significantly increase payments to public employee pension funds.

Some will attempt to use this crisis to reduce or change public employees’ benefits.

Make no mistake about it: they’re coming after your retirement fund!

General Membership Meetings

As per the AIUEA Constitution, one General Membership meeting must be held annually.  To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to attend a meeting that is reasonably convenient, Association Leadership will continue the practice of three meetings held at our three Special Education Centers.  Look forward to communication concerning the details of the meetings which will be scheduled mid Fall.  The information will be repeated, so feel comfortable to attend on a date and at a location most convenient for you.  High importance topics and information will include a pension update, information on the gubernatorial race and political action, an update on the Sources of Evidence, and an opportunity for questions and responses.

Negotiations

As the culmination of the 2007-2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement nears, the Association Leadership has begun the process of negotiations preparation.  Then President Victoria Rice Campbell appointed Denise Croyle in the return position as Chief Negotiator.  Denise will announce her team soon.  The membership will have the opportunity for input into the negations preparation via an individual survey.  Be thinking about the manner in which our mature, comprehensive Collective Bargaining Agreement could serve you even better.
